MUSIC

Music has the power to transport us back in time, to calm our worried minds or boost our moods. There really is a song for every emotion. Feel, heal, connect through music.

Jane Swan

“How is it that music can, without words, evoke our laughter, our fears, our highest aspirations?”

Wiss Auguste

“Once again, she was free. Once again, she found peace. It was music that freed her soul from the dungeon of her mind.”

Douglas Adams

“Beethoven tells you what it's like to be Beethoven and Mozart tells you what it's like to be human. Bach tells you what it's like to be the universe.”

Get Past

Verse 1
There was a time I could not find my way
Lost in the shadows, drifting day by day
Every memory and every little sound
Pulled me back down whenever I came around

Every sleepless night weighed heavy on my soul
Trying to hold together what felt impossible
I kept searching for a reason to believe
That one day these wounds would finally leave

Chorus
But I will not let it define who I am
I’m learning to heal, I’m learning to stand
I’ll face every fear with an open heart
And leave the pain behind for a brand new start

I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been
Finding my light from deep within
No more chains holding down my wings
I’m finally getting past all things

Verse 2
Slowly but surely I’m finding peace
Letting old hurt and darkness release
It’s not easy, some days still feel hard
But healing begins when you lower your guard

I’m learning that strength does not mean hiding pain
Sometimes surviving means dancing in the rain
Every small step is still progress made
Even when fear tries to pull me away

Chorus
But I will not let it define who I am
I’m learning to heal, I’m learning to stand
I’ll face every fear with an open heart
And leave the pain behind for a brand new start

I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been
Finding my light from deep within
No more chains holding down my wings
I’m finally getting past all things

Bridge
I won’t forget what I’ve been through
But I won’t let it control what I do
My strength keeps rising more every day
And the clouds are slowly fading away

I deserve joy, I deserve peace
I deserve moments where my mind can breathe
And though the journey may take some time
I can finally say this life is mine

Final Chorus
I will not let it define who I am
I’m reclaiming my heart, I’m taking a stand
With every scar there’s a story to tell
Of how I survived and learned to heal

Now my spirit is learning to sing
Hope returning on healing wings
My journey’s not over, but I still believe
There’s so much beauty ahead of me

Outro
Day by day I’m finding my way
Growing stronger with each new day
So listen closely and hear me sing
I’m getting past all things
Yes, I’m spreading my wings

Moving Past the Trauma

Verse 1
It’s been a long road through the darkness and fear
Carrying silent battles year after year
Scars on my heart that nobody could see
But I will not let the pain define me

Every tear that I cried in the middle of the night
Every time I felt broken, trying to survive
Made me stronger than I ever knew
Now I’m stepping into something new

Chorus
As I move past the trauma and triggers
I can feel my spirit growing bigger
All the weight I used to carry
Doesn’t feel so cold and scary

Learning how to breathe again
Finding light beyond the pain
Piece by piece my soul is healing
Finally free to start believing

Verse 2
Riding the waves of the hurt and strain
Searching for peace in the middle of pain
Taking small steps toward brighter days
Finding my strength in so many ways

Reaching for help when I need a hand
Learning I do not have to withstand
Every storm completely alone
I am building a safer home

Chorus
As I move past the trauma and triggers
I can feel my spirit growing bigger
All the weight I used to carry
Doesn’t feel so cold and scary

Learning how to breathe again
Finding light beyond the pain
Piece by piece my soul is healing
Finally free to start believing

Bridge
I choose healing over hiding
I choose hope instead of fighting
Against myself and all I feared
The path is finally becoming clear

No more chains around my mind
No more leaving myself behind
I deserve peace, I deserve grace
I deserve to take up space

Final Chorus
As I move past the trauma and triggers
I can feel my spirit growing bigger
What once tried to break my soul
No longer has control

I am stronger than my past
And this freedom’s built to last
From the ashes I am rising
There’s a new life waiting for me

Outro
No longer trapped, no longer confined
I am reclaiming this heart of mine
A new chapter, a brand new song
And for the first time… I finally belong

Music is the best studied of art therapy, and helps to lower anxiety, depression, trauma, psychosis and stress. Important components of music therapy are the meaning of lyrics, improvisational music playing, active listening,
and songwriting.

Music has always been a powerful part of the human experience. Long before words were written down, people used rhythm, sound, and song to communicate emotions, tell stories, celebrate victories, mourn losses, and connect with one another. Across every culture and generation, music has remained a universal language capable of reaching places within us that words alone often cannot touch.

Music has the incredible ability to evoke emotions, awaken memories, and shift our mood within moments. A single song can transport us back to a specific season of life, remind us of someone we love, or help us process feelings we may not fully understand. It can energize us, comfort us, motivate us, and bring peace during difficult times. Music speaks directly to the soul, creating emotional experiences that are deeply personal yet universally understood.

The power of music extends far beyond entertainment. Music influences the mind, body, and spirit in profound ways. It encourages creativity, stimulates thought, and allows individuals to express themselves authentically. For many people, music becomes a safe outlet for emotions that may otherwise remain unspoken. Through lyrics, melody, rhythm, and movement, people are able to release pain, celebrate joy, reflect on life experiences, and reconnect with themselves.

Music also has a unique ability to bring people together. It creates unity among people from different backgrounds, cultures, and life experiences. Whether through concerts, worship, community gatherings, cultural celebrations, protests, or healing circles, music has the power to create connection and remind people that they are not alone. In moments of hardship and uncertainty, music often becomes a source of hope, strength, and collective healing.

In addition to its emotional and social impact, music has been widely recognized for its therapeutic benefits. Music therapy is a growing and highly effective approach used in hospitals, schools, mental health programs, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and community organizations around the world. Trained music therapists use music intentionally to support emotional healing, improve communication, reduce stress, and promote overall well being.

Research has shown that music can positively affect both mental and physical health. Listening to calming music may lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation. Uplifting music can improve mood and motivation, while reflective music may help individuals process grief, trauma, or emotional pain. Music can also help regulate breathing, lower blood pressure, and create a sense of emotional balance during overwhelming moments.

Emotionally, music therapy provides individuals with a safe and supportive way to express feelings that may be difficult to verbalize. Music often reaches emotions buried beneath fear, trauma, sadness, or anxiety, helping individuals release and process what they have been carrying internally. For many people, music becomes a form of emotional release, comfort, and empowerment.

Cognitively, music stimulates important areas of the brain connected to memory, attention, learning, and concentration. Music therapy has been shown to support individuals with developmental disabilities, dementia, brain injuries, and neurological conditions by encouraging mental engagement and strengthening cognitive functioning. Songs and rhythms can trigger memories, improve focus, and support learning in ways traditional methods sometimes cannot.

Physically, music can support healing and recovery by reducing tension, easing discomfort, and promoting relaxation. Rhythm and movement activities are often used to improve coordination, motor skills, and physical rehabilitation. Music can also encourage movement and motivation during recovery processes, helping individuals reconnect with their bodies in positive ways.

Socially, music creates opportunities for connection, communication, and collaboration. Group music activities encourage teamwork, listening, trust, and shared experiences. Through singing, songwriting, drumming, dancing, or simply listening together, people often develop stronger relationships and a greater sense of belonging and community.

Music can also serve as a powerful form of storytelling and social commentary. Throughout history, artists have used music to speak out against injustice, inspire movements, encourage change, and give voice to communities whose stories needed to be heard. Music has the ability to spark conversations, challenge perspectives, and inspire action while uniting people around shared causes and experiences.

Overall, the power of music lies in its extraordinary ability to heal, inspire, connect, and transform. It touches every part of the human experience: emotional, mental, physical, social, and spiritual. Music reminds us that healing can come in many forms and that sometimes a melody, a lyric, or a simple rhythm can say what the heart has struggled to express for years. In moments of joy and moments of pain, music continues to serve as a source of comfort, strength, hope, and healing for people all around the world.
